[ARCHIVED] West Fargo Fire Department and Fargo Fire Department to participate in Narcan leave behind program

West Fargo Fire Department and Fargo Fire Department to participate in Narcan leave behind program

The West Fargo Fire Department and Fargo Fire Department will be participating in Fargo Cass Public Health’s Naloxone (Narcan) leave behind program. The program allows both fire departments to distribute Narcan leave behind kits to individuals at risk of experiencing an opioid-related overdose or to individuals who can assist a person at risk of experiencing an opioid overdose.

“Opioid-related deaths have seen a 108% increase in Cass County over the past four years,” said West Fargo Fire Chief Dan Fuller. “This program will help save lives throughout our bordering communities.”

The kits include two Narcan nasal spray devices with instructions for the proper administration and steps to be taken in the event of an opioid overdose. Additional Narcan training is available upon request, as well as information about treatment resources. This program is funded through a North Dakota Behavioral Health State Opioid Response grant.

“It’s extremely important to have resources available for individuals who may be struggling with Opioid addition. This program will undoubtedly have an impact on our community, getting this life saving treatment in the hands of more people who may be struggling.” remarks Fargo Fire Chief Steve Dirksen.

Narcan does not produce a high, impairment, tolerance or dependence. Access to Narcan provides effective, life-saving measures until emergency personnel can arrive.

According to North Dakota Century Code 23-01-42, any individual is protected from civil or criminal liability for giving naloxone for a suspected opioid overdose.

The departments will maintain a statistical record of distribution for Fargo Cass Public Health records. No personal information will be recorded upon distribution.
