September is Library Card Sign-up Month

September is library card sign-up month

Just in time for back to school – September is Library Card Sign-up Month! To celebrate, any child or adult who signs up for a library card in the month of September will receive a coupon for a free book from the next Friends of the West Fargo Public Library book sale which will be held September 29-30.

A library card is a gateway to a lifetime of reading and learning. In 2017 alone, patrons of the West Fargo Public Library borrowed over 180,000 items from the library’s physical and electronic collections, and over 13,000 people attended library events. Through books, online resources, programs and services, the library helps set students on a path to success and provides a significant cost savings for people of all ages in our community. Visit the American Library Association’s Library Value Calculator to find out how much your library use saves you.

The American Library Association’s annual Library Card Sign-up Month campaign began in 1987 as a response to then Secretary of Education, William Bennett, who stated: “Let’s have a campaign … Every child should obtain a library card and use it.” During September, the ALA and libraries unite together in a national effort to ensure every child signs up for their own library card.
